Commercial Photography vs. Videography: Which Does Your Business Need?

Should your business invest in commercial photography or videography? Learn the differences, benefits, and why many Dallas businesses benefit from both.

One of the questions I get asked the most as both a commercial photographer and videographer is, "Should we invest in photography or video?"

My answer is almost always the same.

You really can't go wrong with either.

Photography and videography each tell a story in different ways, and the truth is that most businesses don't have to choose between them. They work best when they work together. As I've continued building Version 2 Creative, I've found that many businesses initially think they only need one, but after talking through their goals, they realize both play an important role in how customers experience their brand.

The better question isn't whether your business needs photography or videography. It's understanding what each one is designed to accomplish.

When Photography Makes the Most Sense

Photography is often your first impression.

It's what people see when they visit your website, browse your social media, look through your Google Business Profile, or read about your company online. Strong commercial photography creates credibility almost instantly. Professional images communicate quality before someone ever reads a single sentence about your business.

For many businesses, photography is also the most versatile type of content. One photo can be used on your website, in brochures, on billboards, across social media, in email marketing campaigns, and even inside your office. It becomes part of your brand identity.

If you're launching a new business, updating your website, introducing your team, or showcasing products or completed projects, professional commercial photography is usually one of the best places to start.

Where Video Creates a Bigger Impact

Video does something photography simply can't.

It creates movement, emotion, and personality.

A great brand video allows potential customers to experience your business before they ever walk through the front door. They can hear your story, watch your team work, see your process, and begin building trust long before they contact you.

The numbers support that. According to Wyzowl's latest State of Video Marketing report, 91% of businesses use video as a marketing tool, and 93% of marketers say video delivers a positive return on investment. The same report found that 85% of marketers say video has helped generate leads, while 83% say it has directly increased sales.

That doesn't surprise me.

People connect with people, and video allows businesses to communicate in a way that feels authentic and memorable.

Why the Best Marketing Uses Both

This is where I think many businesses get stuck.

They believe they have to choose one or the other.

In reality, the strongest marketing strategies usually include both professional photography and commercial video.

Photography gives you the visual assets you need across your website, advertisements, printed materials, and social media. Video brings those images to life by showing your personality, your process, and the experience customers can expect.

One isn't better than the other.

They simply serve different purposes.

Some of my favorite projects have included both because everything feels more consistent. The photos and videos tell the same story, creating a brand that feels polished from every angle.

What I Recommend to Businesses in Dallas

Working with businesses throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth area, I've found that every company has different goals. A custom home builder has different needs than a golf facility. A restaurant tells its story differently than a medical office or a law firm.

That's why I don't believe there's a one-size-fits-all answer.

If your website feels outdated or your marketing lacks professional visuals, photography may be the first step.

If you want to explain your services, build trust, highlight your team, or connect with customers on social media, video can often have the bigger impact.

Most businesses eventually realize they benefit from both.

The goal isn't creating content just for the sake of creating content. The goal is creating visuals that help your business grow.

Final Thoughts

As both a commercial photographer and videographer, I don't see photography and video competing with each other.

I see them working together.

Every business has a story worth telling. Sometimes that story is best captured in a single image. Other times it needs movement, sound, and emotion to fully connect with people.

The best marketing doesn't choose between photography and videography.

It understands how each one contributes to building a stronger brand.

If you're a business in Dallas or the surrounding DFW area and you're unsure where to start, I'd be happy to help you figure out what makes the most sense for your goals. Sometimes the answer is photography. Sometimes it's video. And sometimes, it's both.
