Should Videographers Niche Down? Here's Why I Didn't
Should videographers choose one niche? Learn why I built Version 2 Creative by filming sports, weddings, commercial work, and more—and how it's shaped me.

When you start building a career as a videographer, there is one piece of advice you hear more than almost anything else: find a niche. Become known for one thing, pick a specific industry, master it, and build your business around that area.
And honestly, I understand why that advice exists. Specializing can be a great strategy for many filmmakers. It helps potential clients quickly understand what you do, makes your marketing clearer, and allows you to develop a very specific skill set. There are many talented wedding videographers, sports videographers, and commercial filmmakers who have built incredible businesses by focusing on one specific area.
However, after almost four years of working as a freelance videographer, I realized that choosing one specific niche was not the path I wanted to take.
Where My Filmmaking Journey Started
I bought my first camera almost four years ago, and my journey started as a sports videographer at Liberty University in Virginia. At the time, I thought sports would be my future.
I loved everything about it. I loved the energy of game days, being on the sidelines, and trying to capture moments that would only happen once. Sports filmmaking forces you to stay ready because you never know when the biggest moment of the game is going to happen. Every play is different, every game tells a different story, and there is an excitement that comes from knowing you have one chance to capture something special.
I thought I had found exactly where I belonged.
Then I started learning from someone who approached filmmaking completely differently.
Learning From Wedding Filmmaking
While living with a roommate who was a wedding videographer, I started learning more about wedding filmmaking. It was almost the complete opposite of what I was used to.
Sports is fast-paced and unpredictable. You are constantly reacting because you never know when a major moment is going to happen. Wedding filmmaking taught me how to slow down, anticipate, and pay attention to the smaller moments that often become the most meaningful parts of a film.
While every couple has a completely unique story, there is a rhythm to a wedding day. You learn when important moments are coming, how to prepare for them, and how to capture emotions that might only happen for a few seconds.
At first, I thought I would eventually have to choose between sports videography and wedding filmmaking. Instead, I realized something important: I enjoyed both because they challenged me in completely different ways.
How Different Industries Made Me a Better Filmmaker
As I continued growing as a freelance videographer, I started taking on projects outside of just sports and weddings. I began working on commercial video production, live events, music videos, real estate projects, and content for different businesses.
The more I worked, the more I realized that every type of filmmaking was teaching me something valuable. Sports taught me how to react quickly, adapt, and stay composed under pressure. Weddings taught me patience and the importance of capturing emotion. Commercial video production taught me how to tell stories around a brand's goals and message.
Every industry brought a different challenge, and each challenge helped me become a more well-rounded filmmaker. Something I learned filming a football game could influence how I approached a commercial project. Something I learned during a wedding could change how I told a story for a business.
Instead of seeing these industries as separate, I started seeing how connected they really were.
Why Version 2 Creative Doesn't Focus on One Niche
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects. Sports, weddings, commercial videos, real estate, live music, music videos, corporate content, and even smaller projects like gym videos and family events have all shaped the way I approach filmmaking today.
Some people might look at that and think I should have narrowed my focus years ago. They might believe that becoming known for one specific type of video would have been the better business decision.
For me, the variety is what keeps filmmaking exciting.
I love learning. I love stepping into a new environment, understanding what makes that story unique, and finding the best way to bring it to life. Every client, every industry, and every project gives me the opportunity to grow.
That has become a major part of who I am as a filmmaker.
Finding the Right Path
I do not think every videographer needs to avoid choosing a niche. There are many incredible filmmakers who have built successful businesses by specializing in one specific area, and I think that can be a great approach.
But for me, becoming a better storyteller has always mattered more than being known for only one type of video.
Version 2 Creative was built around storytelling. Whether I am filming a wedding, a sports event, a commercial campaign, a real estate project, or a brand video, the goal stays the same: create something meaningful that connects with people.
I do not think there is ever a point where you completely master filmmaking. The industry changes, technology changes, and storytelling continues to evolve.
And honestly, I hope there never is.
Because the best part about this career is knowing there is always something new to learn.
